Lauren Nolen (USA)

My name is Lauren Nolen, and I’m a member of the American team of the Joint Science Education Project, which brings students from different countries together to explore polar science in Greenland. I come from the city of Palo Alto in California, and I go to Palo Alto High School. I’ve loved the sciences ever since I was little, and I’m especially interested in the environmental sciences. I’m so honored and proud to represent my city, state, and country up here, and it’s been an amazing opportunity for me to gain more experience and knowledge about science that is being done in a very special place.

When I heard about JSEP, I knew I had to apply, because it was a perfect way for me to learn more about the sciences while also going on the adventure of a lifetime. When I learned I would be able to go, I was super excited, and the experience was better than I could have imagined. During the program. I not only got to meet great new friends from across the world, but also teachers and scientists who provided a ton of support through the research projects we did during the program.

One of the most exciting experiences of my life was going to Summit Station during this program, which is on top of the Greenland Ice Sheet at more than 10,000 feet in altitude. Being around the snow and ice, as well as doing experiments on albedo (the snow’s reflectiveness of light), was definitely the best time that I’ve had in the cold! The JSEP team spent 4 days up at Summit, and the chance to experience such a new environment is one that I will always remember.

Another highlight of the JSEP program were the national nights, in which every national group represented in the program (American, Greenlandic, and Danish) shared food and other cultural aspects with one another. I’ll never forget flag football on the 4th of July, the delicious deserts of Danish night, or eating musk ox on Greenlandic night. I got to learn so much about each different country, and it really broadened my horizons and cultural awareness.

One of the main aspects of the program were the research projects that we did in specific groups. My group worked on studying lichen diversity at different distances from the ice sheet. We also got to work with Dartmouth scientists, which allowed us to get real experience in the field. I had a really awesome experience learning more about this organism.

I’m going to miss everyone and everything I’ve known throughout this program, but I know that this experience will stay with me for a lifetime. The friends I’ve made and memories we’ve created are priceless to me, and I’m so happy that I got to have this opportunity.
